Our Story

We are dedicated to promoting equality and empowerment for individuals, particularly children, with disabilities in Sierra Leone. Through advocacy and support, we strive to create a society where people with disabilities can live independently and contribute to their communities.

Our CEO and founder, Aminata Bangura, is an inspiring young woman with a remarkable story. At 18, she lost both of her legs in a sudden, freak accident. Despite this life-changing event, Aminata made an incredible recovery and chose to focus not only on her own well-being but on advocating for and empowering others with disabilities. Driven by her personal experience, Aminata firmly believes that education is the key to empowerment. This belief is at the core of Amina Equality Concern's mission.

Children Celebrating Eid Alt Text

There are countless children in Sierra Leone who dream of returning to school or starting their education for the first time. However, disabilities—whether their own or their parents'—pose significant barriers to accessing education. Many of these children or their parents have amputated limbs, are blind or deaf, or face speech impediments and mobility issues. In Sierra Leone, people with disabilities do not enjoy the same rights and equalities as those in the UK and other Western countries. They face daily challenges and constant discrimination. Adults with disabilities are often deemed unemployable and must resort to begging on the streets to feed themselves and their families. This relentless struggle for survival leaves little room for personal growth or empowerment.

Discrimination against people with disabilities is not illegal in Sierra Leone. Children and young adults with physical disabilities and wheelchair users find it nearly impossible to locate schools, colleges, or universities with disability access. Parents with disabilities cannot afford school fees or the costs of monthly lunches and transport, denying their children the chance to attend school. Amina Equality Concern stands up for those who face discrimination, helping them and their children achieve self-sufficiency so they no longer have to rely on handouts for their basic needs.
